Julicher Te Muna Road Chardonnay 2018

‘Te Muna’ means ‘secret place’ and the Te Muna Terraces vine growing area is situated in the old Huangarua River path sheltered by the Aorangi Ranges

The soils of Te Muna Terraces are free-draining alluvial gravel, which are rich in minerals making it ideal for growing grapes. The climate is an extension of Martinborough and similar to Burgundy, being only slightly cooler due to higher altitude, but with long cool summers and low rainfall providing the optimum long ripening conditions for grapes.

Viticulture: This wine is made from sustainably-grown and low cropping Clone 15 Chardonnay grapes, hand harvested from our estate vineyard in Te Muna Road, Martinborough.

Winemaking: The grapes were whole-bunch pressed with only short skin contact straight to French oak barriques. The wines were fermented in the same barriques, then left on full ferment lees until the wine went through 100% Malolactic Fermentation. During this time, the wine received six lees stirs during this secondary ferment to add texture. The oak regime was selected to showcase the delicate fruit weight of this noble variety. No finings were used, and only a light cold stabilisation, meaning crystals may precipitate out as time goes by.

COLOUR: Bright gold hue.
AROMA: This Chardonnay has lifted soft aromas of fresh cream, brioche, elderflower, and white peach, which are supported by the smoky vanillin of the oak.
PALATE: The purity of the fruit and acid backbone are layered onto the rich texture created by the lees stirring. The finish is lingering, yet clean; reflecting the cleanliness of the fruit coming off the vine. The wine has great weight, leaving a slight grip on the tongue.
